Sodium sulfide is the chemical compound with the formula Na2S and it has an antfluorite structure. It’s a yellow appearance, water-soluble salts that give strongly alkaline solutions. When exposed to moist air, Na2S emit hydrogen sulfide, which smells like rotten eggs.

Sodium sulfide (Na₂S) used in water treatment as a metal precipitator. It works by reacting with heavy metals in wastewater to form insoluble metal sulfides, which can then be removed by sedimentation or filtration. This process is particularly useful for removing toxic metals like lead, mercury, and cadmium, which are often present in industrial wastewater.

When sodium sulfide is added to the water, it dissociates into sodium ions (Na⁺) and sulfide ions (S²⁻). The sulfide ions bond with metal ions to create solid compounds, which can then be physically separated from the water. This treatment not only helps meet environmental standards but also reduces the risk of heavy metal pollution, which is highly harmful to ecosystems and human health.

Remarks:

The solution of Sodium Sulphide obtained from the process is concentrated to 10-12% and is available at different percentages in tanker loads. In Industries Na2S is produced by carbothermic reduction of sodium sulfate often using coal. It is used in the production of rubber chemicals, sulfur dyes and other chemical compounds. It is used in other applications including ore flotation, oil recovery, making dyes, and detergent.

It is toxic if swallowed and is very toxic to aquatic life. Contact with acids must be avoided. In contact with acids, the toxic gas Hydrogen Sulfide (H₂S) can be released.
